3:49 it’s funny how if Apple allowed switching of third-party apps, they probably could’ve been completely exempt from the DMA without having to do any fighting. If it’s true, that most people in EU do not use iMessage, the only reason why Apple would meet the legal definition is because they force their users to use iMessage as the default messaging platform. And you can’t change that. I personally think that because of this they made their own bed and they should lie in it.
PWA are better for users with old/budget devices. Instead of filling your storage with apps, you only have one app (your browser) that gets updates, and manages the cache and storage for all PWA's. Also from a privacy/security stand point, PWA are much better because they are sandboxed via the browser, and can only execute code like a regular web page (no native code).
For developers, PWA's are also heaven. Only html/css/js, no more native builds, app stores that need to approve , certificates that need to be renewed etc. Thats probably why most big companies have them.
Apple hated them from the start, and has been putting up as many road blocks as possible, because they bypass their sacred App Store. And now they are pulling them entirely, out of revenge against the EU.
Progressive Web Apps are how most scammers convince people that their phone was hacked. They call a pop up number that says they have a virus and then get scammed out if hundreds or thousands of dollars.

I hate webapp on desktop. and certain type of app, like music apps.
I'm not particularly concerned with "overregulation" of corporations, considering some of them have essentially become "sideloaded" aristocracies. They have more power/influence than many governments, regularly impact/control citizens even if they don't buy their products, and those citizens are largely powerless to alter their behavior. The EU's got the right idea: if these companies want access to their consumer base, they have to accept they don't get to co-govern.
PWAs had a lot of promise. I wanted them to succeed. But between every other website abusing them as a form of advertising, and the overwhelming expectation that apps should be searched for in the app store, they never achieved that promise.
As a user, I would prefer a PWA over an installed app for most things that depend on a network connection to function anyway, because it uses less space on my phone and is much faster to install.
As an indie developer, I would prefer to ship PWAs over native apps because they work across platforms (or at least they did before Apple removed them) and don't require paying for a developer account or fighting with app store deployment.

Heaeing that they break web apps is horrible, like, samsung has "try galaxy on iPhone" that way, that means apple is closing more openings for their users to question what it's like having another phone

It is insane how everyone uses iMessage in the US when literally everyone in Europe just uses whatsapp. iMessage is great it's just not really used here, all iPhone users use WhatsApp too just because everyone is/can be on it. When I had an iPhone I made an effort to use Imessage to enjoy the benefits but no one wanted to message via text so we always ended up back on WhatsApp.
from EU.. I have iphone from 3 years now and never used imessage.. and never used it when i had the iphone 4s decades ago… We in europe use whatsapp to message. Iphone is very popular and is lot easy to airdrop things with many people .. airdrop is the selling point for me
The cable choice being a problem goes back to the power bricks of the iBooks. as I've had to replace many to the point where I just replaced the wire, back when they were $80 a brick it would go on the pile until I got around to fixing it. The best thing that they did was go to USB-C with the laptops because then the cable became replaceable separate from the brick.
As far as web apps goes there are a lot of apps that are literally websites and there's a lot of stupid mobile websites if we could just combine those into a halfway decent web app and not have so many stupid apps it would be a good thing. But then again I'm still here with my pie in the sky view that when I bought an iPhone way back when I would be able to use the "real web" on my phone and not a Mobile version which doesn't exist anymore because everything pushes the mobile version complete with hidden menus that you can't get to unless you use the desktop version. So I'm back to carrying a laptop.

As a business owner… no my devices are managed and my apps can be deployed via MDM, which is the common business approach, especially in enterprise. We wouldn’t ever rely on PWA’s for mission critical applications.
Im going to tell you the truth…. WhatsApp isn’t the most popular here, but it IS amongst OLDER citizens… and if you look at the age of all the local government councillors etc, you start to quickly see why this happened.
I think if more and more people in the US will switch to WhatsApp, Apple will need to open op iMessage to stay relevant. But, that probably won’t happen. I’m an EU citizen though

see i dont think its a big issue in the UK because we use every other app instead of apple or android message (texting) most of my conversions are on facebook, discord or snapchat. the only reason id "text" you with imessage would be for something that's important or needs a more time sensitive response
i mean this is the only reason i switched to iphone and would happily go back to android if this was resolved
Could someone explain to me the green vs blue bubbles? All I really know is that on iphones, messages from other iphones show as one color, other devices the other and it somehow is a big deal.
I ofc am an android user so all of my bubbles are the same shade of grey regardless of the other user's device.
