The former Facebook employee who authored a critical book about the tech giant, Meta, has recently made shocking allegations regarding the company’s ties with the Chinese government. On Wednesday, Sarah Wynn-Williams, who served as the global policy director at Facebook from 2011 to 2017, accused the social media powerhouse of collaborating with Chinese authorities on artificial intelligence, censorship, and more, claiming they lied to Congress about these actions.

Speaking to a Senate committee, Wynn-Williams asserted that senior Facebook executives frequently engaged with Chinese officials. During these meetings, they not only shared knowledge to help China compete with U.S. companies but also developed products specifically designed to satisfy Beijing’s censorship requirements.

Wynn-Williams didn’t hold back in her criticism of Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg. She described him as employing a façade of patriotism, stating, “The greatest trick Mark Zuckerberg ever pulled was wrapping the American flag around himself and calling himself a patriot while spending the last decade building an $18 billion business in China.”

During her testimony, she recalled instances where Meta worked closely with the Chinese Communist Party to create censorship tools. “When Beijing demanded that Facebook delete the account of a prominent Chinese dissident living on American soil, they did it,” she said, adding that the company subsequently misled Congress when questioned about the incident.

In response to these claims, Meta’s communications director, Andy Stone, countered Wynn-Williams’ allegations, stating that her testimony was “divorced from reality and riddled with false claims.” He emphasized that Zuckerberg had openly discussed the company’s interest in providing services in China, but that it does not currently operate in the country.

Stone noted that despite their services being blocked in China, Meta’s open-source artificial intelligence platform, Llama, and Oculus virtual reality products are still accessible in the market.

During the Senate hearing, Republican Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri referenced documents and evidence provided by Wynn-Williams, accusing Zuckerberg of deceiving the American public in prior congressional sessions. “The truth is, Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg have lied to the American people repeatedly,” Hawley asserted.

Wynn-Williams’ book, titled “Careless People: A Cautionary Tale of Power, Greed, and Lost Idealism,” was released on March 11 and quickly became a bestseller, despite a legal challenge from Meta preventing her from promoting the book or making derogatory statements about the company.

The book recounts her experiences at Meta and includes alarming claims of sexual harassment by Joel Kaplan, a prominent Republican and ally of former President Donald Trump, who now leads Meta’s global affairs team.

Meta has taken legal action, arguing that Wynn-Williams’ book violates a non-disparagement agreement she signed while with the global affairs team. In her testimony, she claimed, “The measure of how important these truths are is directly proportional to the ferocity of Meta’s efforts to censor and intimidate me.”
