The world has not been the same ever since OpenAI introduced its sensational AI chatbot ChatGPT in November 2022. ChatGPT is currently the undisputed leader among AI technologies in the world, both in terms of popularity and use case. So much so that it has spurred an AI arms race among big tech companies.

ChatGPT has undergone numerous iterations and is currently fueled by OpenAI’s most powerful large language model – GPT-4. While GPT-4 has brought some astounding capabilities to the fore, the world has been eagerly awaiting for its next version, GPT-5. Not much was known about GPT-5 till now. But recently, CEO Sam Altman seems to have dropped some hints on OpenAI’s next big leap.

Altman has revealed that OpenAI is actively working on GPT-5, adding that it may even possess “superintelligence.” Altman expressed that he hopes to raise money from Microsoft for its goal to create Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). The CEO, who was speaking to the Financial Times, also said that the partnership between OpenAI and Microsoft was going ‘really’ well.

According to the report, Altman is currently busy focussing on two areas – research into how to build superintelligence and ways to enhance computing power to achieve this. “The vision is to make AGI, figure out how to make it safe . . . and figure out the benefits,” he was quoted as saying by the publication.

While talking about GPT-5, although Altman did not give a definite timeline, he said that it will take more data to train on. And, according to Altman this data will come from a ‘combination of publicly available data sets on the internet, as well as proprietary data from companies.’ GPT-5 is expected to be more sophisticated than its predecessors. However, Altman said that it was difficult to predict what new capabilities will drive the new model.

It is to be noted that building an AI model like ChatGPT takes billions of dollars and humongous amounts of computing resources. This is because the data is trained on billions and trillions of pages of information and extensive fine-tuning.
