SAN FRANCISCO — OpenAI has appointed a former top U.S. cyberwarrior and intelligence official to its board of directors, stating that he will aid in safeguarding the ChatGPT maker from “increasingly sophisticated bad actors.”

Retired Army Gen. Paul Nakasone previously served as the commander of U.S. Cyber Command and the director of the National Security Agency before his resignation earlier this year.

He has now become part of the OpenAI board of directors, which is still in the process of adding new members following a leadership overhaul at the San Francisco artificial intelligence company last year. Following the abrupt removal of CEO Sam Altman, with subsequent reinstatement after a few days, the previous board was replaced.

In March, OpenAI reinstated Altman to its board of directors and expressed “full confidence” in his leadership after an external investigation into the company’s recent upheaval. While the board technically functions as a nonprofit, it also oversees the organization’s rapidly expanding business operations.

Nakasone has also joined OpenAI’s newly established safety and security committee, which is tasked with advising the full board on “critical safety and security decisions” related to its projects and operations. This safety committee replaced a previous safety team that disbanded after key members resigned.

When then-President Donald Trump selected him to be the director of the NSA and head of U.S. Cyber Command in 2018, Nakasone was already leading the Army branch of U.S. Cyber Command. He maintained both roles when President Joe Biden took office in 2021 before retiring in February.
