'Lot of potential for danger' | What experts are saying about security concerns between Apple, OpenAI

Artificial intelligence experts are closely monitoring Apple’s new partnership with the creator of ChatGPT.

AUSTIN, Texas — Apple’s significant collaboration with OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, has raised concerns about security.

In the announcement, Apple mentioned that the upcoming iOS 18 will introduce innovative features such as personalized emojis and email reading for schedule assistance.

Elon Musk, a former OpenAI board member, expressed skepticism on social media about Apple’s data handling once it’s shared with OpenAI, cautioning users about potential privacy risks.

Despite dropping his lawsuit against OpenAI, Musk also threatened to ban Apple devices at his companies if the partnership moves forward.

Discussing Apple’s press release, EFF-Austin President Kevin Welch expressed some reservations based on the company’s track record in handling user data.

Joshua Pellicer, owner of Real-Time AI, acknowledged the potential dangers but likened it to a balance of power between two entities with advanced capabilities.

Both artificial intelligence experts are closely observing Apple’s partnership with ChatGPT to enhance Siri’s capabilities, ensuring that user consent is prioritized.

Pellicer pointed out the potential for AI assistants to gather personal information, posing risks for professionals like medical professionals handling sensitive data on their Apple devices.

Concerns about bias, plagiarism, and misinformation were raised regarding ChatGPT’s training on internet data.

Apple reassured users that data from AI features will primarily remain on the device and will be securely stored on Apple’s servers if cloud storage is required.

Both experts believe that Apple’s commitment to secure data and transparency in opt-out options could make the partnership beneficial, despite potential imperfections.

“It signifies a positive shift in the direction I envision for this technology,” Welch remarked.

“We anticipate new competitors emerging rapidly in the next six to eight months, making it an intriguing period ahead,” Pellicer added.

The new iOS features are expected to be released this fall.
