Apple Reportedly Not Paying OpenAI to Use ChatGPT in iOS 18

Apple announced a partnership with OpenAI to enhance Siri’s responses by integrating ChatGPT directly into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. However, a recent report from Bloomberg revealed that no cash is changing hands as part of the agreement.

According to Mark Gurman’s report:

Apple is not providing financial compensation to OpenAI for the partnership. Instead, the value lies in promoting OpenAI’s brand and technology to millions of Apple device users, according to sources familiar with the deal.

While the partnership could strain OpenAI’s resources as more Apple users access ChatGPT, there is potential for profit by enticing users to subscribe to ChatGPT Plus for $20 a month, with Apple potentially receiving a commission for referrals made through its devices.

Apple also intends to increase its AI revenue through revenue-sharing agreements with partners, including a forthcoming collaboration with Google’s Gemini chatbot. This strategy aims to capitalize on users’ reliance on AI over traditional search engines, potentially impacting Apple’s revenue from its Google search deal.

While discussions are ongoing regarding a Chinese provider for chatbot services, Apple Intelligence will initially be available in U.S. English, with plans to expand language support in the future.
