The government has published draft guidance to help businesses in the UK upskill their employees to effectively use AI in the workplace, with a focus on areas such as data protection. The guidance aims to ensure that workers have the knowledge and skills they need to safely and effectively use AI tools, including Large Language Models, and manage sensitive data.
The guidance covers five key areas, including using AI to evaluate project performance and developing the skills necessary to work with AI on a day-to-day basis. It is intended to support employees in proposing solutions and expanding their knowledge base to work more effectively with AI across various aspects of their roles. The goal is to boost productivity and help businesses harness the potential of AI to fuel growth and fuel the economy.
The new guidance was developed in partnership with the Innovate UK BridgeAI programme and The Alan Turing Institute, and the government is seeking input from experts and the business community to further develop the guidance and make it practical and effective for businesses across the country. Feedback can be provided through the Alan Turing Institute until January, and updated guidance and sector-specific case studies will be published in the new year.
The guidance introduces four distinct personas related to AI expertise, which will help businesses improve their learning and development offerings and identify key AI skills when recruiting. Businesses are encouraged to engage with the guidance to ensure they have the skills and competencies to adopt AI technologies safely and ethically, and can tap into the package of AI skills and talent initiatives and the AI Skills for Business Competency Framework to effectively navigate the challenges of implementing AI in the workplace.
