In a recent address at an industrial relations conference, Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya emphasized that India’s pro-poor and industry-friendly policies remain vital for job creation and economic growth, even amidst the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI).

The Wisdom of Chanakya

Drawing on the teachings of India’s legendary political strategist Chanakya, Mandaviya highlighted how promoting business leads to wealth creation, employment generation, and increased tax revenues.

The minister articulated that these tax revenues could be utilized for the welfare and upliftment of the underprivileged, reiterating Chanakya’s insights from over two millennia ago regarding their potential benefits for society.

Workers: The Backbone of Industry

Mandaviya pointed out the indispensable role of workers in industrial operations. He stressed that businesses cannot thrive on raw materials, technology, or AI alone. Instead, a skilled workforce is required to maximize these resources.

“There is no need to fear AI or technology,” he asserted, reminding that technological advancements, from telephones to mobile devices, have not reduced the need for human involvement in industries.

Job Creation in the Face of Automation

The minister acknowledged the challenges posed by automation, stating that if one job is lost due to technological advancements, efforts must be made to create two more.

This proactive approach is essential for maintaining employment levels and sustaining economic growth.

The Indian Growth Model

Mandaviya praised the robustness of the Indian economic model, contrasting it with developed countries that are experiencing growth rates of only 2-3 percent, while India accelerates ahead at 7-8 percent.

“Our government is pro-farmers and pro-poor, while also being industry-friendly, recognizing that employment opportunities must be prioritized alongside poverty alleviation,” he stated.

Importance of Skill Development

Addressing the need for skill enhancement, Mandaviya called upon the industry to take the lead in designing training programs for industrial training institutes.

Providing apprenticeships and honing skills were emphasized as crucial steps in preparing workers for the evolving job landscape.

Support from International Organizations

At the conference, Michiko Miyamoto, Director of the International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) South Asia office, echoed the need for skill upgrading.

She noted that the ILO is continuously striving to bridge the skill gap in India, further enhancing the country’s demographic dividend.
