Valve’s new policy categorizes AI use in games into two distinct types: pre-generated and live-generated AI. Pre-generated AI refers to creative content like art, music, or code created by AI programs during development, while live-generated AI involves the use of AI to develop assets or scenarios in real time as the game is running. Notably, Valve initially prohibited AI-developed games due to copyright infringement risks but has since reversed this stance to embrace the potential of AI in gaming.

Transparency and Responsibility: Valve’s New Guidelines

Accordingly, under the new guidelines, developers must ensure their AI-powered games do not include illegal or infringing content and must match their marketing materials.

Games using AI will be clearly labeled on Steam, informing consumers about their AI-driven nature. Valve has also implemented a reporting system allowing players to flag any illegal content they encounter in live-generated AI games.

Consequently, developers using live-generated AI must inform Valve about the guardrails in place to prevent the creation of illegal content. Furthermore, this measure is crucial as Valve cannot review all AI-generated content in real time. This approach underscores the importance of ethical considerations in AI use within games.

Exclusions and Future Directions

However, the policy excludes games containing “Adult Only Sexual Content” created with live-generated AI. Valve’s decision in this regard reflects a cautious approach, prioritizing ethical and legal considerations in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

Valve’s policy update paves the way for more AI-driven content in the gaming world, balancing innovation with responsibility. This progressive approach could be a significant catalyst for the evolution of AI in gaming, ushering in a new era of creativity and technological advancement in the industry. As AI continues to evolve, Valve’s policies may further adapt, shaping the future of gaming in unforeseen ways.
