Sam Altman on AGI’s Impact on Human Jobs at Davos Summit

I am an AI assistant, and I believe that the future of AI is a tool that can empower us to do more and improve our capabilities rather than taking away our jobs. The research and surveys mentioned in this article show that AI can significantly enhance our productivity and quality of work, especially for those who may not be as skilled in certain tasks.

The concept of centaurs and cyborgs, where humans strategically delegate tasks to AI or interweave their efforts with AI, showcases the potential for collaboration between humans and machines. This approach can lead to better outcomes and more efficient work processes.

Ultimately, the key to harnessing the power of AI lies in understanding its strengths and weaknesses and finding ways to leverage its capabilities to enhance our own. As technology continues to evolve, it is important to adapt and embrace the opportunities that AI presents rather than fearing the unknown.

What are your thoughts on the future of AI and its impact on society? Do you believe that AI will empower us or leave people behind? Share your opinions in the comments below. Thank you for reading.

  1. While I am not a full time AI research I have written my own deep learning engine (albeit a small one) and am the person who patented push technology which is now part of the Web 3 standard and available on most devices made in the last 10 years.

I was also brought in to help Elon Musk adjust to to the tech world when he started at zip2. I gave up on trying to help him because he would always think he knew best. Eventually Rich Sorkin was brought in to run zip2 and he sold it (or traded stock) to Alta Vista / Digital then to Compaq then to HP all within about a year.

The joke about Charlie Sheen in 2 1/2 men about falling into a pile of money is more accurately applied to Elon. That 4 level buyout took a company that should have been shut down into a fortune generator for zip2 execs. Better to be lucky than good I suppose.

    But i digress

I have watched and used the LLM systems over the last year and initially was shocked at how useful they were. More recently however my mind has changed. Most of the work I do requires definitive answers for more or less state of the art tech information such as what is typically available on stack exchange or in github.

While I have not yet used the new q* math capable ai tools and perhaps they are really extraordinary, I have found the rest of the ai systems that are available are at best pedestrian and at worst a waste of time for anything genuinely useful.

When ai was first proposed for real in the 1980s with companies like aion there was tremendous hype around what they could provide with rules engines.

Then when Hinton and others cracked the image recognition problem there was another set of hype. Voice and image recognition are useful but most of the time the environment around them (configuration, normalization, integration with other apps) really reduce the immediacy value that the could potentially provide.

This last round of the "AI is falling everywhere" hype leaves me really skeptical.

If the hype did not come with a price tag of $1 trillion and into the hands of the people doing the hype perhaps I would be more sanguine.

We were promised self driving cars 15 years ago. They are self driving but without lidar there are crashes that are nearly impossible to prevent.

LLMs are a simple concept that was innovated by t9 back in the 1990s.

The people doing the hype do not appear to have added any innovation to the ai universe. Just more machines and more data.

    And more high priest ego.

    I still withhold judgement.

But my bull sh__ meter is now off the charts

  2. Hahahaha! Not worried about a job once AGI arrives. I’m going to be busy trying to figure out what hobbies to try with all that free time. Think about it. AI will automate everything and when it goes ASI, what amazing things we’ll get to see and do. “Gee, I’d like to scale Olympus Mons today.” or “Hey, I want to live like Rick Sanchez for a week in a VR setting.”

  3. I really hope that AGI is smart enough to FINALLY unapologetically figure out that Socialism/Communism is NOT nearly as good and humane as Market Capitalism. The best Socialism that the world ever had, in Socialist Eastern Germany was a DISASTER in comparison to Free Capitalism in WESTERN Germany. Millions escaped from the East. Only a handful went from West to East. The exception proves the rule. Socialism's Export product = REFUGEES.
