(Reuters) -OpenAI CEO Sam Altman disclosed to some shareholders that the company is contemplating changing its governance structure to a for-profit entity not controlled by the firm’s nonprofit board, as reported by The Information on Friday.
Altman mentioned one possibility being considered by the board is converting to a for-profit benefit corporation, a model adopted by competitors like Anthropic and xAI, according to a source familiar with the discussions cited in the report.
The talks surrounding the restructuring are ongoing, and Altman and the other directors may ultimately opt for a different approach, The Information also stated.
When asked for comment on the report, OpenAI replied: “We are unwavering in our commitment to developing AI for the greater good. The nonprofit core of our mission will remain intact.”
