In 1997 Deep Blue — a chess-playing system run on a purpose-built IBM supercomputer — won a match against a human world champion — one of the first instances of artificial intelligence (AI) in the gaming industry.

Today, AI-powered gaming applications offer players realistic, immersive and challenging experiences that were once unimaginable. The technology has changed the industry forever.

An Ongoing Transformation For Game Developers

AI has transformed the industry by enabling game developers to create realistic environments and adapt gameplay to players’ behavior and preferences. With AI, game developers can make the experience more engaging and enjoyable for players.

AI is now able to create realistic environments that simulate real-world scenarios. By using AI, game developers can add weather conditions, physics and terrain, making the gameplay more authentic and engaging for players,” said Jonathan Shroyer, chief CX innovation officer at Arise Virtual Solutions and Arise Gaming. “It can adapt to the player’s behavior, making the game more challenging or relaxing, depending on the player’s preference, enhancing the experience. AI can also help improve the game mechanics to keep players engaged and challenged.”

And that’s just the start. AI is also disrupting the gaming industry by creating more personalized experiences for players. Games are no longer a one-size-fits-all experience. Instead, they can adapt based on the unique circumstances of the player.

Some examples of AI-driven games include Middle-earth: Shadow of War, Civilization VI and The Last of Us Part II, which all harness the power of AI technology to create more strategic gameplay experiences for gamers.

While AI has changed the gaming industry forever, the possibilities are still endless.

“As AI becomes increasingly more sophisticated and implemented across industries, we can expect the gaming industry to continue to take advantage of its uses,” Shroyer said of what’s to come in 2023. “On the backend, AI will be utilized to create more dynamic pricing models to reflect more customized experiences. GANs (generative adversarial networks) will be implemented more to help create new levels, characters and storylines to elevate the gaming experience and NLP (natural language processing) will continue to be used and will evolve to improve interactions and conversations.”

The name of the game for the gaming industry is player experience. Gamers who play interactive, engaging, challenging and rewarding games that have strong graphics and storylines will play longer and enjoy a better overall experience. All of this can be accomplished with the help of AI.
