OpenAI’s New Read Aloud Feature for ChatGPT

OpenAI has introduced a new Read Aloud feature for their ChatGPT, aiming to enhance user experience and accessibility. This feature allows users to have ChatGPT read its responses in one of five voice options, making it convenient for users who are on the go or prefer listening over reading. It is now available on both the web version of ChatGPT and the iOS and Android ChatGPT apps, expanding its reach to a wider audience.

The Read Aloud feature supports 37 languages and will automatically detect the language of the text it is reading. This functionality is available for both GPT-4 and GPT-3.5, showcasing OpenAI’s commitment to providing cutting-edge AI capabilities to users. The introduction of this feature demonstrates OpenAI’s dedication to incorporating multimodal capabilities, enabling ChatGPT to respond through more than one medium effectively.

This innovation follows the launch of a voice chat feature in September 2023, where users can engage with ChatGPT through verbal prompts. With the addition of the Read Aloud feature, users can now have written responses read aloud by ChatGPT, providing a seamless and interactive experience. Users also have the option to set up the chatbot to always respond verbally, further personalizing the interaction.

On mobile apps, users can tap and hold the text to access the Read Aloud player, allowing them to control playback with options to play, pause, or rewind the readout. The web version of ChatGPT displays a speaker icon below the text, indicating the availability of the Read Aloud feature. This user-friendly interface makes it easy for users to utilize the voice capabilities of ChatGPT seamlessly.
