Following the announcement of Ilya Sutskever’s departure from Microsoft-backed OpenAI, questions arose regarding his next move. It has now been revealed that Sutskever will be embarking on a new AI venture called Safe Superintelligence (SSI).
New Beginnings for Sutskever
In a post on X, Sutskever shared that SSI’s main goal is to develop a safe superintelligence. The startup, led by Sutskever, will focus solely on creating a product with safety as its primary consideration. Joining him at SSI are Daniel Gross from Apple and Daniel Levy from OpenAI. Sutskever played a role in the departure and return of Sam Altman as CEO of OpenAI last year. Following his departure from the company last month, Sutskever aims to work on his AI project without the pressures of marketing AI products or services.
While OpenAI is currently focused on revenue-generating products and partnerships, Sutskever’s SSI will operate in a more peaceful environment, free from the competitive nature of the AI market. Sutskever did not disclose the funding sources or amount raised by SSI yet. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s concentration on AI has boosted its shares, with the recent launch of Copilot+ PCs being another successful move for the company.
