Elon Musk has withdrawn a lawsuit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman, citing the company’s shift from its original mission of developing AI for humanity’s benefit to focusing on profits instead.
Musk filed a request to dismiss the lawsuit “without prejudice” on Tuesday, indicating that a settlement was not reached. The complaint could potentially be refiled.
In 2015, Musk co-founded OpenAI with Altman and Greg Brockman, with an initial focus on non-profit initiatives. Musk resigned from the board in 2017, and later sued the company for deviating from its original mission by partnering with Microsoft.
The lawsuit alleged that OpenAI’s collaboration with Microsoft contradicted the founding agreement to keep its technology accessible to the public. Musk accused the company of betraying its core values and turning towards profit-driven motives.
Musk, who is working on a competitor to ChatGPT, recently stated his intention to ban Apple products from his companies if OpenAI’s AI software becomes integrated into Apple’s operating system.
