Recap of AI in 2023

Can you believe it? 2023 is almost over, and throughout the entire year, I’ve done my best to keep my finger on the pulse of all the latest AI news and tools. Then, I turned around and made videos to share what’s been going on in the world of AI with you.

Since we’re at the end of the year, I thought it would be fun to make a recap of all the major moments in the world of AI throughout the entire year. While there were literally hundreds, if not thousands, of announcements in the AI world for the entire year, I’ve narrowed it down to roughly 45 big announcements.

January

In January, Microsoft invested $10 billion into OpenAI, kicking off a brilliant move that has since integrated OpenAI’s technology into Microsoft’s products. The month also saw the launch of 11 Labs beta, providing the first good quality text-to-speech we had seen until then.

In the AI art world, Instruct Pics2Pi was released as open source, marking a significant advancement in image editing with AI.

February

Google announced the release of Google Bard, entering the chatbot game, along with Microsoft’s Bing Chat which used GPT technology underneath. Control Nets were also introduced, providing the ability to put AI-generated images into custom poses and positions.

March

March was a significant month for AI with the release of GPT-4, a huge leap in large language models. Mid-Journey Version 5 and Model Scope also made advancements in AI art, while Adobe entered the scene with Adobe Firefly for AI art images.

March also saw OpenAI’s announcement of ChatGPT plugins, extending the capabilities of the chatbot tool.

April

Segment Anything and Wonder Dynamics were introduced, allowing for impressive image and video editing capabilities. Autonomous AI chatbots like Baby AGI and AutoGPT also made an appearance.

May

May was a month of integration for AI, with Google announcing AI integration in all its products. OpenAI released ShapeE for 3D model generation, and Adobe made contributions with generative fill in Photoshop.

June

June saw the release of Apple Vision Pro and Runway Gen 2 for advanced AI video generation.

July

In July, ChatGPT introduced Code Interpreter, enabling the analysis of spreadsheets, graphs, and more. Other advancements included Anthropic’s CLAD2, Llama 2, and Custom Instructions for ChatGPT.

August

August saw the launch of Mid-Journey’s Variational Paint capability for advanced image editing.

September

ChatGPT introduced the ability to see, hear, and speak, along with the Vision feature for image analysis. MixL of Experts also made its mark in September.

October

OpenAI released DALL-E 3 for prompt-adherent AI image generation, while Adobe offered a text-to-Vector feature in Illustrator.

November

November brought the announcements of Grok by Elon Musk, OpenAI’s GPT5 models, and Runway’s Motion Brush for advanced video editing. The rise of latent consistency models and real-time image editing tools was also notable.

December

In December, Gemini was announced, and MixL of Experts introduced a new way of handling large language models.

And there you have it, a recap of the major advancements in AI throughout 2023. Here’s to an exciting 2024!
