At ISTE+ASCD, we believe this limited perspective overlooks the transformative potential of generative AI in education. This pivotal moment calls for more than just improved efficiency and academic integrity policies; it urges a comprehensive reevaluation of our educational model.

Exploring Five Essential Frames for AI Integration
During a recent convening for GenerationAI, Dr. Joseph South, Chief Innovation Officer at ISTE+ASCD, shared five critical frames designed to thoughtfully guide the transformation brought about by AI in education. The guiding questions derived from Dr. South’s insights are instrumental in shaping discussions on AI in education, highlighting both challenges and opportunities.
Equity and Fairness
How can we ensure that those most distant from opportunities benefit just as much as those with greater access, power, and privilege? Focusing on equity requires a keen understanding of all students’ varied backgrounds and circumstances. Additionally, teacher readiness is crucial; students learning from teachers adept in new technologies and teaching methods are at a distinct advantage compared to those whose teachers adhere to traditional methods.
Students should be empowered to consider the impact of technology in their lives while developing essential skills for their future careers. Limiting educational experiences to outdated approaches restricts students from accessing the valuable opportunities provided by AI-enhanced instruction.
Aligning Our Educational Values with Technology
While addressing equity ensures appropriate access to AI opportunities, we must also ponder how our fundamental educational values align with these new tools. How can we ensure that our core values guide our work instead of the default values of the technology, which may not truly reflect our own?
As an educator, my teaching philosophy emphasized that students should be at the center of every decision made in the classroom. This principle is equally important when selecting technology tools. Are the values that underpin your teaching philosophy accurately represented by the tools you choose? For me, ensuring that any technology enhances creativity, unlocks new pathways for learning, and enriches the student experience is essential.
Pursuing Quality Over Efficiency
The efficiencies brought by AI can revolutionize classrooms for both educators and students. However, simply speeding up ineffective methods does not serve us or our students. How can we prioritize meaningful change over mere efficacy?
As educators, we often find it easier to use familiar methods rather than rethinking our practices. If an AI tool generates an abundance of True-False questions, this might represent more of a probability exercise than a demonstration of genuine learning. This emphasizes the need for creating more meaningful assessments rather than just optimizing ineffective practices. AI tools can enhance our craft, but improving teaching is ultimately our responsibility.
Empowering Professional Learning
Deploying technology is a relatively simple task, yet preparing educators to use it effectively poses significant challenges. How can we ensure that our staff feels prepared and confident to teach alongside their students as technology continues to evolve?
Current professional development initiatives often concentrate narrowly on specific tools and platforms, neglecting the broader imperative of cultivating lasting digital competencies. These tools evolve rapidly, turning tool-specific training into a fleeting resource.
Instead, we should focus on fostering the essential skills that teachers and students need for an unpredictable future. In the GenerationAI Community of Practice, we dedicated our time to discussions around future job landscapes, the distinction between learning about and with AI, the implications of AI in tutoring, considerations of academic integrity, and the risks associated with misinformation. Only after establishing this foundational understanding should we train educators on specific tools.
Transformational Learning at the Core
Using transformational technology merely for incremental improvements is akin to steering a rocketship down a freeway. You can do it, but should you? This is why our exploration of AI’s potential in education revolves around the Transformational Learning Principles. Our conversations should always center on the student experience.
Participants expressed their gratitude for engaging discussions about AI’s opportunities and risks without an overwhelming emphasis on specific tools. Antonelli Mejia, a principal based in Boston, highlighted the excitement of learning about potential improvements and leveraging a network of national leaders to enhance educational practices.
As we progress through this 15-month journey with a diverse group of educators, we are not merely establishing another professional development program. We are forging an AI-powered educational model focused on meaningful transformation. Educators are not just learning about AI; they are reimagining classrooms across America.
