Microsoft plans to boost games graphics with AI

Vole coming up with DLSS-like AI upscaling feature

Microsoft, the software king of the world, is gearing up to launch its DLSS-like AI upscaling feature for PC games.

X user PhantomOcean3 spotted the feature inside the latest test versions of Windows 11 over the weekend. Microsoft says its automatic super-resolution is a way to use AI to make supported games play more smoothly with enhanced details.

It sounds like Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) technology uses AI to upscale games and boost frame rates and image quality. AMD and Intel also have their versions, with FSR and XeSS gaining popularity in recent PC game releases.

Microsoft has not yet officially unveiled this new super-resolution feature, so it’s unclear exactly how it will work or if it will need any specific hardware. Nvidia’s DLSS uses the tensor cores on its RTX range of graphics cards, whereas AMD’s FSR and Intel’s XeSS work on rival GPUs.

Microsoft is working on an improved colour management feature for Windows 11, which will be especially handy for the latest round of OLED monitors that use HDR. Windows has lacked a decent OS-level colour management system for years, leaving PC gamers having to add custom colour profiles in a dialogue box that looks like it came from Windows 95.

With the upcoming changes, colour management will be part of the main display settings area of Windows 11, letting PC users set colour profiles for sRGB and DCI-P3. A new feature will also automatically control these various colour profiles.

Microsoft describes this colour management feature as “Auto colour management, which ensures your apps and other content have accurate colours on this display. “

It’s unclear if this will let Windows 11 users quickly change gamma curves, though. Hopefully, this means Microsoft is investing more in HDR support on Windows, which can lead to a dull desktop experience if enabled system-wide.
