The Vanderbilt University School of Law has created the Vanderbilt AI Legal Lab in an effort to assess how artificial intelligence intersects with the delivery of legal services and access to justice.
According to the university, VAILL is housed within the school’s Program on Law and Innovation. Its objectives include training students to navigate an AI-driven landscape, pioneering ethical applications of the technology, and forging partnerships of academia, industry and the legal community to bring projects to life.
VAILL plans to build coursework focused on applications within the law and technological skill-building, with assistance from Jules White, associate dean for strategic learning programs and associate professor of computer science, and John Nay, a visiting scholar at Vanderbilt and a fellow at CodeX, The Stanford Center for Legal Informatics.
Caitlin Moon and Mark Williams are founders and co-directors of VAILL and are joined by VU faculty members Cara Suvall, Jennifer Safstrom and JB Ruhl.
“AI has the potential to reshape the law and legal services in an unprecedented fashion,” Vanderbilt Law School Dean Chris Guthrie told Vanderbilt.edu. “Through this new lab, Vanderbilt Law School has a unique opportunity to play a pivotal role in this transformative era.”
