MANILA, Philippines — Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte has stressed the importance of responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education.
AI “has the potential to revolutionize the educational landscape” and redefine the way people acquire and apply knowledge, Duterte said in her speech during the commencement exercises of the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA.
“Its emergence has brought about a paradigm shift in education. It can personalize learning experiences, provide instant feedback and enhance educational outcomes,” Duterte said.
She, however, was quick to add that education is not just about “acquiring knowledge from machines, but about the growth and revival of a nation.”
“Education ensures that we not only equip ourselves with skills and expertise but also develop a sense of responsibility towards our society. It is through education that we cultivate empathy, compassion and a commitment to social justice,” Duterte said.
Thus, Duterte said that while the country must embrace the possibilities that AI presents, there must also be a system of checks and balances to ensure that it is being used responsibly and ethically, especially in the education sector.

“We must guard against the potential biases and inequalities that may arise from the use of AI in education. It is essential to strike a balance between embracing AI’s capabilities and preserving the human touch in education,” Duterte said.
The education chief also reminded teachers that AI should never be meant to replace the learners “but to enhance their abilities.”
